Epilepsy
There are over 40 different types of epilepsy, and each type presents its own unique combination of seizure type, typical age of onset, EEG findings, treatment and prognosis. That's why it's so important to work with an experienced team of physicians dedicated to finding the right treatment for you.
Why Choose the INI?
The INI Epilepsy Program was established in 1995 and provides services to patients throughout Illinois. Our EEG department performs both inpatient and outpatient EEGs, as well as video EEG monitoring. Video EEG monitoring makes it possible to observe brain waves and physical activity at the same time. This provides the physician with a better view of the source of the seizures, which enables the epilepsy team to prepare a more precise treatment plan.
We believe even one seizure is too many. Our goal is to completely control seizures with no side effects from medication or surgery. When complete control is not possible, we work to reduce the number and severity of seizures. Early and appropriate referral can improve quality of life.
Treatment Options
Usually the first line of treatment is one or more of the available anticonvulsant medications. The epilepsy team will work with you to determine which medication will provide the greatest benefit with the least side effects. If the seizures cannot be controlled with medication, surgery may be an option. Another form of treatment developed recently is the vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) implant, which sends electrical current to the vagus nerve. The VNS consists of a computerized electrical device similar in size, shape and implant location to a pacemaker that connects to the vagus nerve in the neck. The device stimulates the nerve at pre-set intervals and intensities of current, and may provide a reduction in seizures.
