Unlike conventional surgery:

Gamma Knife radiosurgery can treat brain tumors and vascular malformations while sparing adjacent healthy, normal brain tissues.  This is due to the ability of the Gamma Knife to focus a large number of radiation beams on a precisely defined target volume.

Because of the very rapid fall-off of radiation dose outside the target volume with radiosurgery, the surrounding brain tissue receives very little radiation exposure.  This extreme localization of radiation dose to within the target volume greatly reduces the risks of Gamma Knife radiosurgery compared to conventional radiation treatment or brain surgery.

The radiosurgery treatment itself typically lasts less than an hour and involves minimal patient discomfort.  Patients typically return home after treatment. And can resume pre-surgery activities within a short time.
