Gamma Knife Center
State-of-the-art treatment options are a standard practice at the Illinois Neurological Institute. From technology to facilities to techniques, the doctors and staff at the INI stay at the forefront of medical advances to provide the best treatment for their patients.
In 2001, the INI opened the Gamma Knife Center offering Gamma Knife Radiosurgery – a non-surgical, painless treatment for a variety of neurological disorders. Since then, more than 1,200 patients have been treated with radiosurgery at our facility.
In 2008, the Gamma Knife Center was updated with the most advanced technology available, becoming the first facility in Illinois to offer the Gamma Knife “Perfexion,” a machine that utilizes the most advanced, precise Gamma Knife technology in the world, offering unsurpassed accuracy and patient comfort.
How Gamma Knife Works
- Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is a non-invasive treatment that delivers a single high dose of radiation to a precisely defined target with minimal radiation to surrounding brain tissue.
- The Gamma Knife Perfexion is an effective, alternative to traditional brain surgery or radiation therapy for intracranial disorders; it may also be used in conjunction with these treatments as well.
- A key feature of the Gamma Knife Perfexion is its extraordinary precision, up to 100 times better than alternative technologies. It is the most precise radiosurgical system in existence, with the ability to design the radiation treatment to exactly match the shape of the tumor or lesion. This precision makes it possible to treat conditions such as intractable facial pain. Additionally, the Perfexion machine allows treating physicians to access more areas of the head and neck than previously possible.
