Multiple Sclerosis
A Center of Excellence for Multiple Sclerosis Care
The INI Multiple Sclerosis Center is bringing hope to multiple sclerosis (MS) patients throughout the heart of Illinois. Our mission is to provide excellence in MS care and ensure the best possible outcomes for those who depend on our expertise. We are passionate about MS and have built a highly specialized team with over 70 years of combined experience. As a Center of Excellence, we go beyond diagnosis, treatment and research to offer therapies and social services for the overall well-being of our patients and their families.
The Center has neurologists with specialized training in multiple sclerosis, neuro-immunology and neuro-ophthalmology. The Center offers all current treatments for MS, including an infusion center and an extensive outpatient rehabilitation facility. Multiple clinical research trials can offer qualified patients innovative treatment. All diagnostic studies are available including 3T MRI and Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), a new method for assessing retinal nerve fibers for MS patients with visual problems. All this adds up to holistic, patient-centered care to provide the best possible outcomes for those living with MS.
Appointments are by physician referral only. To schedule an appointment, call 309-624-8500.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
MS is defined as a disease of the central nervous system due to a breakdown of myelin (the insulator for nerve fibers). The scar tissue left behind in multiple areas is called sclerosis, hence the name Multiple Sclerosis. When nerve fibers are exposed or damaged, it disrupts the essential flow of electrical impulses affecting every movement. The cause is unknown, but MS is not contagious, and females are affected twice as much as males.
Symptoms
- Altered eye movements
- Abnormal pupil responses
- Subtle changes in speech patterns
- Altered reflex responses
- Impaired coordination
- Sensory disturbances
- Muscle stiffness and/or weakness of the extremities
Diagnosis of MS is based on a patient's history and thorough examination, including some tests, and a physician will determine if MS is the source of the patient's difficulties. No two patients respond to MS the same way, and that is why treatments vary so much. The goal is to prevent new MS lesions from forming throughout the nervous system and to combat effects such as loss of memory or cognitive skills.
