Occupational Therapy

The goal of occupational therapy (OT) is to increase skills in the tasks of every day living. Areas in which an occupational therapist may concentrate include:

    =Images= | Occupational Therapy
  • Dressing
  • Bathing
  • Eating
  • Cooking
  • Other daily living skills, depending upon what is important to the patient and family.

The occupational therapist assists patients to regain arm and hand functions, endurance, mobility, visual perceptual skills and thinking skills needed to carry out these tasks.

Occupational therapists teach special techniques or suggest equipment like special eating utensils, assistive devices to help with dressing and grooming, or bathroom aids. Occupational therapy may also recommend wheelchairs and make hand and arm splints. Before discharge from the program, the occupational therapist will teach the patient's family the best ways they can assist their loved one, teach home programs to patients and family, and suggest ways to make getting around home as easy as possible.
