Physiatry

Rehabilitation therapy is initiated with an order from the patient's physician. When more intensive rehabilitation needs are present, a physician who specializes in rehabilitation may be consulted. These physicians, called physiatrists (fizz ee á trist or fizz eyé uh trist), are certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and provide care in the treatment of all neurologic and musculoskeletal disabilities, from traumatic brain injury to lower back pain.
Physiatrists provide valuable help to other physicians by coordinating the rehabilitation aspects of a patient's care, so that the patient can return as quickly and closely as possible to their best level of function. Our physiatry staff stay in close contact with patients' physicians to provide updates on progress so patients' physicians can continue to manage overall care.
