Treatment Options

INI Rehabilitation Services works with each individual to create a treatment plan that will help achieve the highest possible levels of independence, for both inpatient and outpatient needs.

Inpatient

Our inpatient rehabilitation services program works with patients in all areas of OSF Saint Francis Medical Center to provide the best rehabilitation services available. In addition, our 26-bed Rehabilitation Unit takes an interdisciplinary approach to working with patients 13 years of age and older, who have been diagnosed with neurological and/or musculoskeletal disorders. Each patient admitted to the unit receives a comprehensive evaluation, a coordinated, individualized treatment plan and at least three hours of therapy daily. The rehabilitation team meets weekly to update treatment plans and discuss goals.

The Rehabilitation Unit operates under the direction of a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrist) and a nursing patient care manager. A clinical rehabilitation nurse specialist is also available to patients to provide in-depth expertise in rehabilitation. The rehabilitation nurses give support, counseling and education to patients and their families. Nurses work with patients on day-to-day life skills, including eating, grooming, bathing, dressing, bowel and bladder care, skincare, mobility, medication and overall safety. The rehabilitation nurses work with the entire medical team to help transition patients toward a stress-free discharge.

Outpatient

Our seven convenient outpatient clinics provide individualized orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation services to fit our patients’ diverse needs (services vary at each clinic).

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapy team works to make patients more independent by improving range of movement. We use a variety of therapeutic treatments to help patients who have musculoskeletal, neuromuscular and cardiopulmonary disorders. Those treatments include:

  • Strengthening mobilization
  • Conditioning therapy
  • Ultrasound and electric stimulation
  • Functional retraining

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapists help patients with day-to-day skills, including dressing, eating, bathing and cooking, as well as safety. In addition, occupational therapists may recommend wheelchairs or other assistive devices that will help patients become more independent.

Occupational therapists also perform driving evaluations and home assessments. When possible, they work closely with the patient’s family to understand the patient’s needs and determine how to make him or her as independent as possible in the future.

Speech Therapy

Our compassionate speech and language pathologists are on hand to restore and rehabilitate speech and language skills. Areas of expertise include:

  • Speech: Articulation, fluency and voice
  • Language: Includes expression and comprehension of verbal and written information
  • Cognitive aspects of communication: Attention, memory, problem solving, judgment and reasoning
  • Swallowing

Medical Psychology

Our rehabilitation services focus on the whole person—not just the injury or disorder. Our neuropsychologists devise therapy treatment plans to help the patient with attention, concentration, memory and problem solving, as well as helping them understand and work through their feelings regarding their condition. Patients’ treatment plans may include:

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Pain control methods
  • Stress reduction skills
  • Healthy lifestyle choices

Therapeutic Recreation

Recreation and enjoyment of life is important to everyone, particularly those who are in rehabilitation. Whether you’re interested in computer activities, gardening, sewing or sports, our therapeutic recreation staff will help you with the adaptive resources you need to enjoy fulfilling activities..

Day Treatment Program

This intensive outpatient rehabilitation program is designed for patients participating in therapy for several hours a day, two to five days a week. An inter-disciplinary team designs a unique program for each individual, and the goal of each program is to help the patient on a physical, cognitive and psychosocial level. This is particularly helpful for patients who have experienced a neurological injury or illness such as spinal cord injury, stroke or head injury. The therapy is designed to help patients improve function at home, work or school.

Case Management

Many illnesses and injuries are complex, and treatment can seem overwhelming. Our case managers work with patients and medical professionals to help them navigate the system and ensure that patients receive the highest standard of care, with the lowest level of stress and worry. Case managers are available to answer patient’s questions about treatment throughout the rehabilitation process. This allows patients to fully focus their energy on where it’s needed most—their treatment.

Social Work

Our social workers help prepare patients for a smooth transition into day-to-day life after rehabilitation. They address patients’ concerns and act as a support system, counselor and educator. Our social workers are available to help patients plan for their future, and can offer information about financial assistance, help fill out paperwork or preauthorize services. They can also refer patients to local agencies, services and resources. Some referrals include:

  • Home health medical/therapy services
  • Skilled nursing facilities
  • Vocational rehabilitation
  • Home care assistance
  • Transportation assistance
  • Services for elderly or disabled people
  • Local, state and national support groups
  • Outpatient therapy
  • Home-delivered meals
  • Substance abuse treatment

Specialty Programs

Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation Training

When your balance is off, the root cause could lie in one or more of three systems—the vestibular, visual and somatosensory systems. Our clinic uses the Propio 5000, a state-of-the-art technology platform to not only test balance, but to also work with patients to improve their balance.

Aquatic Therapy

Warm water therapy treatments are used for patients with acute, transient or chronic disabilities, syndromes or diseases. Under the supervision of a licensed therapist and/or therapy assistant, warm water therapy uses the buoyancy, pressure and resistance of water to help in rehabilitation.

Industrial Rehabilitation

OSF Saint Francis Center for Industrial Rehabilitation strives to help workers heal and return to work. In addition to rehabilitation and therapy, the center also offers pre-hire work screens, post-hire work screens, return-to-work testing, functional capacity evaluation and work conditioning. Consulting services that focus on the prevention of injury in the workplace are also available.

Adult/Pediatric Pelvic Floor Services

OSF Saint Francis Pelvic Floor Services treats patients who have pelvic pain and bladder or bowel concerns that are a result of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. Each treatment plan is uniquely designed fit the patient’s needs. Our therapists take a behavioral approach, and work to retrain muscles and the bladder to cure or reduce episodes of incontinence, without the use of surgery or medications.

Lymphedema Therapy

The OSF Saint Francis Lymphedema Program works to reduce swelling or other symptoms caused by damage or malformation of the lymphatic structures. Our specially trained therapists rely on a combination of techniques and exercises to work with patients.
