Speech-Language Pathology
Work with a speech-language pathologist may focus on a patient's ability to understand spoken or written language and improvement of the ability to express thoughts and needs to others. Adaptive equipment or techniques may be part of the therapy. The speech-language pathologist will address all areas of communication including:
- Sound of the voice
- Flow of the speech
- Ability to be understood by others.
Because the same muscles used in speech are used in swallowing, swallowing ability will also be assessed. The speech-language pathologist will work with the patient to make swallowing easier and will help the dietitian in planning the types and consistencies of foods that can be eaten easily and safely.
Patients and their families are involved in speech therapy to assure that patients can communicate with others to the best of their potential.
