Therapeutic Recreation
The certified therapeutic recreation specialist (TR) works as a member of the rehabilitation team in the comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation unit and outpatient settings to help patients develop, keep, and express their leisure lifestyle. Therapeutic recreation programs consist of therapy, education and recreation programs and may include: use of recreation equipment, use of leisure time, increasing the knowledge of community accessibility, and community recreation resources, as well as development of new leisure activities and skill.
Community re-entry is a key component of the therapeutic recreation program. Community re-entry is a therapy session in which the patient and family go into a community setting to practice skills learned in their rehabilitation therapy. The major goals of the community re-entry program are to increase awareness of community accessibility and to encourage participation in community activities after discharge.
