Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is the
test painful?
No. An abrasive gel used to clean the electrode locations may
cause a slight
"scratching" sensation, but this is not painful.
Q. How
do you expect me to sleep with all of these wires on?
The vast majority of patients become accustomed before the
test is started. We understand that this is not like a normal
night of sleep at home, but most people
get plenty of sleep to allow a good sample to be recorded.
Q. Will
you give me something to make me sleep?
No. Sleep Disorders Center staff is prohibited from giving
any medication. Sleeping pills are not generally used during
the time of sleep testing, unless
you routinely
take sleep aids prescribed by your doctor.
Q. Should I take my usual medications?
Yes, unless your doctor has instructed you not to.
Q. How long
will I be there?
For overnight testing only, you will most likely be finished
by about 7:00 AM the next morning.
Q. What
if I have to get up and go to the bathroom at night?
The wires are disconnected at a junction by the technologist
and you will be able to use the bathroom easily without
having to remove the equipment.
Q. What
should I wear to sleep in?
Whatever is comfortable for you (shorts, tee shirt, pajamas,
etc.)
Q. Should
I do anything special with my hair/skin?
Yes. Your hair should be clean, dry and free from hairspray,
oils, etc. Remove all make-up, body lotions and oils
from skin.
Q. Can I read or watch TV before bed?
Yes, but only until the technologist asks you to
begin your study. At that time the lights will
be turned
out.
Q. Can
I have someone stay in the room with me during the night?
No, unless the patient is a child or an adult with
special needs. Children should have one parent
or guardian stay with them. Adults
who need
special assistance
should have another adult well known to that patient who can
assist with their needs. During testing, the
lights are kept off and the
parent or
assistant must stay quiet. No television, cell phones, or other
disturbances will be
allowed.
Q. What
will you be able to tell me about my study in the morning?
Nothing. Technologists may not discuss any information obtained
during testing.
A sleep physician must interpret the test before any information
is released.
Q. When
will I have results?
A sleep study contains a large amount of data that consists
of nearly 1000 pages of information. Each "page" of the study will be scored by a technologist
after the study is completed. It will then be made ready for the sleep physician
to read (page by page). In general, study results are available to your physician
within 5 business days. Some exceptions occur, but we make every effort to make
results available as quickly as possible.
