Carotid disease is the most common large vessel cerebral vascular disease and causes about 20% of all strokes. Nearly 10% of the elderly population has a >50% carotid stenosis (narrowing of the blood vessel)from atherosclerotic disease. In addition, patients can develop stroke from other carotid vasculopathies (vessel problems) such as carotid dissection, vasculitis, a-v fistula or aneurysms. It is therefore a challenge to diagnose carotid disease accurately and manage it appropriately. Recent advances in imaging and catheter-based treatments (carotid stenting) offer new options in carotid disease management. At the same time these advances add to the complexity of selecting the most appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment options for a single patient.
